My name is Maddie Mozenter and I have created The Quiet Path to Bravery to act as a learning resource as well as a way for kids just like me to feel comfortable in their own voice. This children’s book centers around a fictional character named Lucy and the complexities and challenges that kids with Selective Mutism face. Selective Mutism has the ability to alter ones social life and overall experience as they navigate life. As a young child, there weren’t many resources for my parents or me to help understand Selective Mutism and how to overcome the obstacles along the way. I hope that Lucy’s path to bravery serves as a reference to how Selective Mutism feels and will not only make the world a better, happier, and more inclusive place, but will also emphasize the strength she evokes. Being quiet is not a weakness but instead shows courage, bravery, and a new, quiet kind of strong.
